The land at Prestwick airport was first used for aircraft in 1913. However, proper building developments were not started until 1935 when the airfield was used for training pilots. This included a basic control tower and several hangars. This marked the beginning of Scottish Aviation Ltd, who chose Prestwick airport as their home due to its good weather conditions.

During World War II Prestwick airport was used as a base for US aircraft deliveries and other transit flights. Scottish Aviation began production of aircraft at Prestwick, which continued until 1996. The next major expansion was between 1958-1964 in which a new control tower, terminal, and freight buildings were built, and very little has changed since.

​

In addition to the passenger terminal, Ryanair have a maintenance base here, and they are currently the only scheduled passenger airline active at Prestwick.
