One of the UK's most historic airports, dating back to the first world war where it was used as a front line station. After the war the aerodrome at Rochford temporarily returned to farmland, but was revived in 1933 when it became Britain’s first municipal airport.

Southend airport's most successful period for passengers was between 1961-1970 when it was used by Channel Airways to ferry passengers and cars to the continent with the classic Carvair aircraft (converted Dakotas). Passenger numbers then reduced during the following years, when it was mainly being used as a GA airfield with maintenance facilities.

In 2008 the airport was purchased by the Stobart Group, and Southend started a new life with a brand new terminal and aircraft parking stands. EasyJet is the main airline operating today, with up to 30 flights a day, and increasing passenger numbers to over 1 million a year
