Scheduled flights started at Liverpool Airport as far back as 1930, and increasing demand for Irish Sea crossings at the end of the decade resulted in the construction of a very grand looking termnal building, together with a control tower, and two hangars. During World War Two, the airport was used by the RAF, and known as RAF Speke.

Normal civilian operations resumed after the war, and Liverpool City took control of the airport on 1st January 1961. Five years later, a new 7500ft runway was opened on a site to the south east of the existing airfield. A modern terminal was built next to the new runway in 1986, and the old 1930s terminal building was closed (it is now a hotel). In 2001, the airport was renamed as "Liverpool John Lennon Airport", in honour of the Beatles' singer.

Major expansion plans are in place for Liverpool Airport over the next decade, including new terminal buildings, and the introduction of permanent long haul services.
